The Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has launched a tender for eight new licences to produce continuous casting billets with a combined annual production capacity of 2.8 million tonnes, as part of the Ministry of Industry’s efforts to deepen local manufacturing and strengthen value chains across the iron and steel sector.
The move comes in line with directives from Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem, who recently announced the strategic tender aimed at ensuring the availability of essential raw materials for domestic steel manufacturers and supporting the localisation of production inputs.
Nahed Youssef, Chairperson of the IDA, said the new licences are intended to increase Egypt’s domestic billet production capacity, helping to meet the needs of local re-rolling mills, deepen industrial localisation, reduce reliance on imports and conserve foreign currency.
She added that the tender comprises four licences, each with an annual production capacity of 500,000 tonnes, alongside four additional licences with a capacity of 200,000 tonnes each, bringing the total targeted production capacity to 2.8 million tonnes per year.
Youssef said the authority is implementing the Ministry of Industry’s directives to strengthen industrial integration across the metals sector by encouraging investment in basic and supporting industries. She noted that this would help ensure a sustainable supply of production inputs, increase local added value and enhance the competitiveness of Egypt’s iron and steel industry.
She also highlighted the IDA’s commitment to removing obstacles facing investors seeking to enter this strategic sector and providing the incentives and facilities needed to attract new investments.
The IDA invited companies interested in participating in the tender to purchase the terms and specifications documents from its headquarters in New Cairo’s Fifth Settlement between 11 and 20 August 2026. Bidders are required to submit their offers by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, 9 September 2026.
The authority also clarified that applications or requests previously submitted to the IDA concerning the production of continuous casting billets will not be considered as part of the new tender.
