Egypt has completed the final handover of a new sanitary landfill in the Mediterranean city of Dabaa as part of ongoing efforts to expand waste management infrastructure and reduce the environmental impact of municipal solid waste, the Ministry of Local Development and Environment said.
The facility, located in Matrouh Governorate, was constructed at a cost of EGP 60m as part of the government’s programme to develop an integrated municipal solid waste management system.
Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad said the project forms part of a broader national plan to provide sustainable and environmentally safe waste disposal facilities across Egypt’s governorates while improving public cleanliness and environmental services.
According to the ministry, the Dabaa sanitary landfill covers an area of 10 feddans and was constructed in accordance with approved environmental and technical standards.
The facility includes a secure sanitary landfill cell and a protected pond for collecting and evaporating leachate—the contaminated liquid generated as water passes through waste. It also features an internal road network, an administrative building, a security room, and electricity generators.
Additional infrastructure includes water and fuel storage tanks, a vehicle tyre-washing unit, and an integrated lighting system designed to support safe and continuous operations.
Awad said the project complements a series of waste management facilities that have been completed or are under development across Matrouh Governorate.
The government has previously completed the final handover of a sanitary landfill in Marsa Matrouh at a cost of EGP 35m, as well as a mobile waste transfer station in the city costing EGP 9m. Another sanitary landfill in the border city of Barani has also received initial handover following investments of EGP 65m.
According to the ministry, total investment in waste management infrastructure across Matrouh governorate has reached approximately EGP 169m.
The Dabaa project was implemented under a cooperation agreement involving the ministries responsible for local development and environment, planning and economic development, and the Arab Organization for Industrialization.
Awad said the government will continue monitoring the completion and handover of waste management projects nationwide to ensure they become operational as quickly as possible, contributing to cleaner communities, safer waste disposal practices, and improved environmental conditions.
