Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni in Kampala last Friday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and coordinating positions on regional issues, on the sidelines of the second extraordinary summit of troop-contributing countries to the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
During the meeting, Abdelatty conveyed greetings from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to its longstanding partnership with Uganda. He highlighted the growing momentum in bilateral relations, citing increased high-level exchanges, including Al-Sisi’s visit to Kampala in May.
Museveni asked Abdelatty to convey his greetings to Al-Sisi and praised the Egyptian president’s role in promoting peace and stability across Africa and the Middle East. He also reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to further expanding cooperation with Egypt.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of strengthening trade, investment and economic cooperation, particularly in infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, water resource management and the pharmaceutical industry. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand the Egyptian Medical Centre in Jinja and renewed Egypt’s invitation for Museveni to attend the African Union Coordination Summit, which Egypt will host on 4 October 2026, along with the accompanying African Business Forum.
On water security, Abdelatty underlined the importance of cooperation among Nile Basin countries to achieve mutual benefit and reiterated Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures in the Eastern Nile Basin. He praised Uganda’s role during its chairmanship of the Nile Basin Initiative’s consultative process and welcomed efforts to restore consensus within the initiative and advance joint development projects in accordance with international law.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments, including the situations in Sudan, Somalia and the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and agreed to strengthen bilateral and multilateral coordination in support of peace, security and sustainable development across Africa.
