Saturday’s trial of the 17 defendants, including members of the Socialist Popular Alliance Party (SPAP) and witnesses to the killing of Shaimaa Al-Sabbagh, who are now accused of violating the Protest Law, was held at Abdeen Court. It was attended many of Egypt’s prominent human rights lawyers. The ruling was to postpone the case to 9 May and was what lawyers had called for as they have been denied proper access to the case’s files to prepare a defence. Daily News Egypt also interviewed members of the party who gave their accounts of Sabbagh’s death.
