On Friday the streets of the capital were coloured red. Not by the blood of those believing in something that others do not, but by hearts, teddy bears, chocolates, flowers and other assorted gifts inspired by mainstream American cinema.

For one day anti-American sentiments were put aside and sentimental declarations of eternal love were embraced with fervour by a large segment of the population.

On the other side of the world a celebration took place when Egyptian immigrant Eslan Baroumdi, who is holding his three-year old daughter Salma in the picture, had become a US citizen at a special Valentine’s Day naturalisation ceremony in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.
