The Egyptian State Security Prosecution held in remand four individuals affiliated with “Sinai Province” on Monday for 15 days pending investigations, according to local media reports.
The defendants face accusations of joining an illegal group that targets state institutions.
According to the accusations levelled against the defendants, the individuals in question oppose the government based on the state’s adherence to a man-made constitution which does not abide by the Quran or Sharia law.
With this belief, the defendants have sworn to fight against the police and state institutions.
Meanwhile, security campaigns continued operations in North Sinai, leading to the capture of 37 fugitives, according to state-run news agency MENA.
On Friday the “Islamic State” (IS) affiliated group “Sinai Province” published video allegedly containing footage of their recent attack on Al-Safa security checkpoint in Al-Arish on 19 March. The footage also shows several military trainings carried out by members of the group.
Sinai has become the scene of frequent clashes between militants and state security forces.
As a result, an extensive counter-insurgency operation was launched to curb militancy within Sinai. These operations have imposed a state of emergency in the northern regions of the peninsula.
