Press Syndicate postpones general assembly

The Press Syndicate postponed Friday an emergency general assembly after failing to reach a quorum, to 18 March.

The syndicate said in a statement despite being notified, less than half of the journalists enrolled in the syndicate registered in the assembly.

The assembly which was set to discuss journalists’ monetary issues as well as violations and abuses directed against them. It is also one the latest escalation by the syndicate to demand better treatment of journalists across the country.

On Wednesday hundreds of journalists organised a protest on in front of the Syndicate to demand the release of fellow journalists detained in Al-Aqrab and other prisons, amid the state’s tacit acceptance of their deteriorating health.

Protesters shouted slogans that condemn the state’s practice of imprisoning journalists and the deleterious conditions that prisoners are subject to inside Al-Aqrab prison. They expressed solidarity with the prisoner’s who have begun a hunger strike to demand an improvement to their conditions.
