The North Cairo Court released two policemen accused of raping a woman inside a police car on a EGP 3,000 bail each on Tuesday.

The court scheduled their next trial session for early April to further review the case.

Former prosecutor general Hisham Barakat referred the two policemen to criminal court in June 2015 on charges of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young woman near the district of Shubra.

Preliminary police investigations stated that forensic tests revealed that the rapist’s DNA matched that of one of the policemen, after tests were conducted on semen found of the young woman’s clothes.

Sexual assault is a crime punishable by a prison sentence ranging between seven and 15 years, according to member of the National Council for Women Mohamed Ibrahim.
