Minister of Supply Khaled Hanafy announced the introduction of a barcode system that aims to protect food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals brands from counterfeit and consumer’s from fraud.

The interactive system for brand protection is based on having barcode labels on authentic products to reassure customers that they are not buying fake goods and commodities.

The system was launched by the Ministry of Supply and the Ministry of Military Production.

“The interactive system for brand protection aims to use the latest scientific methods in the internal trade development and the protection of the trademark owner to encourage them to continue producing their goods,” Hanafy said.

Hanafy pointed out that the ministry will encourage the consumer to use this system through smart or non smart phones to report on fake commodities by sending SMS.

Hanafy noted that the largest Egyptian companies lose up to EGP 30m annually due to counterfeit goods. However, he also called for other companies to register in the new system.
