Egyptian authorities released 51 Palestinian migrants on Sunday and deported them to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing on Sunday, according to Palestinian news agency Ma’an.

The migrants had entered Egypt through underground smuggling tunnels and were allegedly on their way to Europe, when they were arrested at sea by Egyptian authorities.

They were subsequently detained in Al-Arish central prison and the Ba’ar El-Sabaa police station in North Sinai, according to Ma’an.

Kamal El-Tayeb, head of the Palestinian community in Sinai, told Ma’an that the 51 prisoners will be sent back to Gaza on Sunday.

“It’s scheduled to send them away on Sunday morning under heavy guardianship to the Rafah passageway then to Gaza,” said El-Tayeb.

The Rafah border crossing was scheduled to remain open both Sunday and Monday, according to the Palestinian Embassy in Cairo.
