The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors will donate EGP 13m to establish the Social and Economic Centre aimed at developing Alexandria.

The chamber is launching the centre in cooperation with the armed forces, the Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC) said in a Sunday statement.

The donation package includes: EGP 5m for developing slums in the governorate, to be implemented by the armed forces; EGP 5m to meet the needs of the poorest villages; EGP 2m to develop Smouha Hospital in Alexandria; and EGP 1m to develop several squares in the city.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb praised the initiative, and called on civil society organisations and the private sector to cooperate with the government in implementing development projects, the chamber said.

Mehleb called on stakeholders to participate in developing the technical education and in supporting small and micro enterprises, with the aim of creating more job opportunities in Alexandria.
