The army spokesperson said Saturday that the latest death count of the Sinai Friday attacks reached 30 army personnel.

A car bomb exploded in the Karam Al-Qawadees neighbourhood in Sheikh Zuweid, North Sinai, on Friday afternoon, killing at least 27  and injuring 20, state-owned Al-Ahram reported.

State media added that another attack took place in a checkpoint in Al-Arish, leaving three killed.

No group has claimed responsibility for  the attacks so far.

The government declared a state of emergency in Sinai on Friday, with the closure of the Rafah border.

The Supreme Council of Armed Forces, headed by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, is expected to meet on Saturday to discuss the latest acts of violence.

Over the past several months, confrontations between the military and “terrorist groups” have been frequent.
