Detained activist Ahmed Douma was transferred to a hospital on Thursday after Judge Nagy Shehata refused the request despite his deteriorating health conditions, state-owned al-Ahram reported.
“Ahmed Douma is really dying in prison,” Freedom for the Brave initiative, an initiative which provides support for prisoners said.
The group added they believe the Judge’s refusal was an act of “revenge.”
Douma suffers from several health conditions, including stomach ulcers, and his wife and lawyers have been requesting the prosecutor to transfer him to a hospital for months, the group reported.
Douma started a full hunger strike on 28 August, but reportedly ended it after his health problems began to increase.
He is accused of attacking the cabinet building and security personnel as well as burning the Scientific Institute in Cairo back in December 2011.
He was sentenced to three years in prison last December, and is charged with breaking the Protest Law, rioting, “thuggery”, using violence against Abdeen Courthouse security personnel, and possessing melee weapons.
On 22 September, a number of human rights lawyers submitted a complaint to the court against the “untrustworthy” judge presiding over Douma’s trial.
