Attacks on security forces continue leaving one dead and two injured

A police sergeant was shot dead in Beni Suef on Monday as attacks on police continued around the country. Two policemen were also injured in separate incidents in Mansoura and Giza, and a vehicle belonging to the security forces was set on fire in Aswan, according to state affiliated Al-Ahram.

Unidentified gunmen shot Sergeant Hassan Said Hussein as he was on his way to work in Beni Suef, according to the Ministry of Interior media office.

A policeman was injured on Monday after armed assailants shot at a police car in Mansoura, the capital of Daqahleya located north of Cairo.

The Ministry of Interior’s press office said the policeman’s injuries are minor and added that investigations into the injury are underway but “all terrorist groups are connected.” In a separate incident in Giza, another policeman was rushed to the hospital after he was shot at by unidentified men, according to Al-Ahram.

A vehicle belonging to an officer of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Aswan security directorate was set on fire. Local residents claim to have found the car ablaze and a forensics team is examining the vehicle.

Newly appointed Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb expressed his condolences to Hussein’s family. He added that the interior ministry would work hard to bring the perpetrators to justice.

On Friday, a policeman in Mansoura was shot and killed on his way home from work. In December, an explosion at the Daqahleya security directorate in Mansoura left 16 people dead and more than 100 injured.

Last week, three attacks in four days in Zagazig left two policemen dead and an armed forces colonel injured.

Since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, attacks on security forces have been increasing.  While they have been mostly concentrated in Sinai, the past few weeks have seen more and more attacks outside the peninsula.
