Homeland Security Prosecution announced on Sunday that it had referred five officers from Israel’s secret service, Mossad, along with three Egyptians, to trial at a criminal court.

The defendants in the case are charged with spying and supplying information to a foreign entity affecting national security, reported state-owned Al-Ahram.

Spokesman for Israel’s foreign ministry Palmor Yigal said that Israel is “not aware of these allegations” describing them as “obviously preposterous, unlikely and totally unfounded”.

The trial is expected to begin on Wednesday in the canal city of Ismailia, according to AFP.

The five Mossad officers are said to be “on the run”, according to Al-Ahram; however, it is not clear if the three Egyptians are in custody.

The prosecutor general’s office did not respond to a request for further information.
