Spinneys practices the most rigorous food safety procedures while handling packaged and unpackaged food products, always –

preserving food according to strict hygiene guidelines, the same guidelines that are applied in the most sophisticated hyper markets worldwide. At the same time, the food products on display are subject to regular examination by a dedicated team, as a way to guarantee absolute food safety at any given time according to the instructions and guidelines for food safety issued by World Health Organization (WHO) and by concerned local and international organizations.

–         Before the food products go bad or expire before or upon delivery, Spinneys staff follows strict procedures and carefully keeps these products in areas out of the reach of our customers and away from our already ‘on-the-shelf’ products. Meanwhile, we cooperate with our authorized suppliers to return these items or replace them with similar quantities according to specific purchasing terms stated in our supply contracts. These procedures are carried out systematically and without any errors.

–         In the article, it was stated that around 7 tons of spoiled food products were seized by food supply investigation authorities in our store in Mall of Arabia.  This is completely untrue. The truth is that these products were not on display and in fact,  Spinneys requested a memorandum for disposal from the health authorities, to ensure  we were rightfully  refunded our money by our suppliers. This is a normal and regular process and occurrence. However, due to the late issuing of this memo  our suppliers were  unable to come in order to collect these quantities, as a result of curfew.  As a result these products remained on premise longer than normal, however, at no point were these products on store shelves nor were they available for customer purchase.  Additionally, the quantity of off-shelf spoiled products was greatly exaggerated, as the quantity mentioned in the official report was much smaller than the quantity reported in your article, totaling only 100 kilograms worth of products.

–      Spinneys has 4 stores in Egypt, with more than 6000 direct and indirect employees, while working with more than 500 authorized suppliers. The total investment for each store exceeds LE 200 million. The inaccurate information and biased reports not only impact our reputation in the local market, but also jeopardize the future of 6,000 families and raise doubts about the company’s investment in Egypt. In our opinion this is irresponsible reporting.
