The Tamarod campaign has released a statement Wednesday urging authorities to close Suez Canal to vehicles carrying weapons supporting US military attacks on Syria.

The group’s spokesman added in the statement that “it is a national duty to support the Syrian army” and denounced “people who betray their country.”

Following accusations of chemical weapons attacks, Syria vowed last Tuesday to defend itself against a possible US strike, AFP reported.

More than 1,300 people died of toxic gases released by the Syrian regime last Wednesday and 355 died of “neurotoxin” symptoms in affected areas, according to Doctors Without Borders.

Tamarod was formed last April and aimed at gathering more than 22 million signatures nationwide calling for the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed by the military on 3 July following mass demonstrations.
