The Ministry of Electricity and Energy released a statement saying power cuts will occur during Monday evening peak hours, reported state-run Al-Ahram.

Electricity distribution companies will cut the power in different areas across the country for a period not exceeding one hour to maintain the safety of the electrical grid.

The statement revealed that the ministry is seeking to ration the use of electricity due to the increase in power consumption. Such increase is expected to reach 25,000 megawatts during peak hours, from 7pm until 10pm.

Hospitals, sanitation, civil defence, mills, bakeries, some important administrative buildings, water, fire, police and metro stations will not be influenced by the power cuts, read the statement.

According to Al-Ahram, the ministry is calling upon citizens to ration their energy consumption.

The ministry said in its statement that the power grid had experienced problems due to consumption being higher than production, which was attributed to the limited quantities of fuel such as natural gas and diesel needed to run the power plants at full capacity around the clock.
