  /   No Comments

We love food. We love the real, down to earth, tried-and-tested, handed-down-through-the-generations, local Egyptian food. Here is your chance to learn how to make these local delicacies in your own home. And just so you know what to ask for, we have added how to say the ingredients in Arabic. No more excuses, off to the souq!

• 1 cup milk – la-ban
• 2 eggs – beid
• 2 teaspoons baking powder – ba-king pow-der
• 1 teaspoon vinegar – khal
• 2 teaspoons vanilla – va-nil-ya
• 2 tablespoons cocoa powder – bo-dret ka-kow
• 1 pinch of salt – malh
• cooking oil spray – spray zeit

• Preheat the oven to 175C.
• Beat the eggs with an electric mixer for one minute.
• Add the vanilla and vinegar to the eggs and beat again.
• Add the oil, milk and sugar and beat for another minute.
• Mix the flour, baking powder and salt together in a separate bowl.
• Make a hole in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour the liquid mixture into it. Beat for one minute.
• Separate the mixture in half in two separate bowls.
• Add the cocoa powder to one of the bowls and mix until it has a chocolate-like consistency.
• Spray a pan with cooking spray and add half the white mixture to a cake pan. Add the chocolate mixture and then add the second half of the white mixture on top.
• Swirl a fork gently through the layers to create a marble effect, do not mix completely!
• Place the cake pan in the middle of the oven and bake the cake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
