A gang in Ismailia attacked a local police station after one of their members was arrested during drug raids.

The gang deals in both marijuana and hashish said Mohammed Saad of 6 April in Ismailia.

MENA reported that gang tried to free their member by attacking the police station with guns and molotov cocktails. When they were pushed back by police forces, a gunfight broke out in downtown Ismailia.

“The gang fought with the police on Al-Madares Street,” said Ismailia resident Mona Yusuf Ahmed. She said that Al-Madares is the central strip in Ismailia and many bystanders were caught up in the fray.

The MENA report cited the involvement of taxi drivers and street vendors who were angry at the wonton destruction caused by the gang.

Ahmed said that people who were walking downtown were afraid as tires were burned and bullets were shot. She said the gang was “trying to make things a mess and break down the police station so they could get their man out.”

This drug gang came from Al-Kofar District said Ahmad, adding the Al-Kofar is the location of most drug dealing in Ismailia.

MENA reported that the chaos downtown was eventually ended by security forces, who arrested many of the combative gang members.
